The Mustela® Story

Since 1950, Mustela has been constantly innovating: new concepts, new formulae, new textures, more practical products and packaging to reply to the needs of mothers while taking account of the latest scientific advancements: minor everyday revolutions for the greatest possible benefit of mothers’ and babies’ skin.

Mustela® is the name chosen by Paul Berthomé, the father of the current President of Expanscience Laboratories, the company tha makes Mustela® : it is a Latin word meaning stoat, a small animal whose fur turns an immaculate white in the winter.

The expression refers to the notions of whiteness and softness but it also evokes a world of purity and innocence. Thus the world of Mustela® came into being. In its role as a pioneer brand, Mustela® has created many innovations that have had an impact on the daily lives of mothers and infants for 3 generations.

1950: the birth of Mustela® Cleansing Milk

Paul Berthomé went into partnership with a pharmacist: this brought about the creation of Laboratoires Expanscience. They became aware, on contact with mothers, that there was no alternative to soap for baby’s cleansing routine. At the time, hygiene and skin care routines took a long time even though women’s lives were modernising. To respect baby’s delicate skin, at every nappy change they had to use several products: soap, water, sweet almond oil and talcum powder. They thus created a “2 in 1” product in the form of an emulsion which combined cleansing and softening properties: a revolution!

In 1950 this was the very 1st cleansing milk in Europe dedicated to the cleansing routine of babies. Its texture, its gentleness and its evocative scent that was recognisable among all others became a true symbol of early childhood.
